All pharmacology teaching is organized as follows:

For all students we have two compulsory courses: basic pharmacology (third year, one semester), and clinical pharmacology which is given in the fifth year (dentistry, pharmacy) or in the sixth year (medical students).

In addition we have a number of optional courses. All students at our faculty have to collect 6 credit points by attending these optional courses. In these courses I have tried to implement a principle of problem-based teaching but in a completely different way The main goal of these courses is "Education via Research". This means that students become involved in a research project, currently going on in the department.

At the beginning start of the courses they get a theoretical course and seminars where they are taught how to do experimental work and are introduced to the particular research problem. They have to pass examinations and those students who get high scores can apply to do a practical course. At the end of each year we organise a students conference, publish abstracts in the proceedings and do everything as we do for an adult conference. Students prepare posters have oral communications. The best posters and presentations get awards (200- 300 USD). These conferences are very popular among students. Students work usually in a group of 3-4 and do research very enthusiastically. Unfortunately we can provide only about 70% of students with experimental work. Analysis shows that that those students who are involved in research (it does not matter in which department) have consistently higher scores in basic pharmacology than others.
