A high priority for NC-IUPHAR has been the complex issue of nomenclature for the plethora of multi-subunit receptors and ion channels. "The IUPHAR Compendium of Voltage-gated Ion Channels 2002", edited by Bill Catterall, George Chandy and George Gutman, addresses the challenges for the nomenclature of the voltage-gated ion channels and breaks new ground in resolving old difficulties.
The NC-IUPHAR subcommittees have proposed nomenclature for the major ion channel families which is, for the most part, consistent with the recommendations for receptor nomenclature. Unlike previous compendia, the ion channel compendium also covers data for proteins that are only functional when expressed with other subunits.
